Does your dog charge across the road or react to traffic lights when crossing?🚦 @tippa____ the border collie has been struggling with the movement and sound of busy roads - particularly common in our working dogs who are bred to notice and control movement!

To work on this, a couple of weeks ago we worked on desensitisation to the traffic signal and being released to cross the road separately before putting them together.

We’ve also made sure to add enrichment activities and games to his routine that mimic stalking and herding to provide outlets and gain impulse control around his triggers 🐾

❌ Avoid repetitive and mindless fetch = obsessive behaviour, zero control or structure

SETUP FOR SUCCESS
✅ Practice in quiet areas
✅ Break training into small steps
✅ Master LEAVE and COME without a ball first
❌ Don’t allow freedom to continue rehearsing behaviour (if they’re not ready, keep on-leash!)
❌ Don’t jump too far ahead too soon

BE CLEAR WITH TRAINING
✅ Add structure to your games
✅ Cue YES to engage with toy
✅ Cue LEAVE to stop pursuit and COME to recall back to you
❌ Don’t engage in play if they ‘find’ a ball in the park
❌ Provide consequences for mistakes: loss of freedom/leash on, increase distance, stop game for 10+ seconds. 3 chances before game over and reassess training.

MOTIVATION
❓ Do they want to reinforcement on offer?
❓ Have you broken training into achievable steps?
❓ Are you maintaining fun and easy repetitions?

@tippa____ is a herding dog so we need breed specific outlets for this. Herding dogs want to control movement and Tippa particularly LOVES soccer balls and rugby balls. You can see I use direction changes to allow for stalking behaviour and increase engagement! Play is a high value reinforcer for him, so I need to make it more worthwhile than chasing the soccer ball!

In this video I’ve allowed him to stalk the soccer ball but when I’ve kicked it, cued LEAVE and then COME to recall back to me. I then provide a BIG play reinforcement so he learns it worth his while!

✅ Cue YES to engage with toy
✅ Cue LEAVE to stop pursuit and COME to recall back to you
❌ Don’t engage in play if they ‘find’ a ball in the park
❌ Provide consequences for mistakes: loss of freedom/leash on, increase distance, stop game for 10+ seconds. 3 chances before game over and reassess training.

❓ Do they want to reinforcement on offer?
❓ Have you broken training into achievable steps?
❓ Are you maintaining fun and easy repetitions?

@tippa____ is a herding dog so we need breed specific outlets for this. Herding dogs want to control movement and Tippa particularly LOVES soccer balls and rugby balls. You can see I use direction changes to allow for stalking behaviour and increase engagement! Play is a high value reinforcer for him, so I need to make it more worthwhile than chasing the soccer ball!

In this video I’ve allowed him to stalk the soccer ball but when I’ve kicked it, cued LEAVE and then COME to recall back to me. I then provide a BIG play reinforcement so he learns it worth his while!

✅ Close supervision monitoring for stress signals such as stiffness or freezing, tucked tail, avoidance, shake off, whale eye, one-sided play, humping, standing over, roughness
✅ Both puppies are enjoying the interaction
✅ Short interactions, frequent breaks

Learning The Leave It Cue 🔥
This is a great safety exercise, teaching your puppy to avoid things such as 🍪 food you’ve dropped, something nasty they want to eat on their walk 🙈 another dog’s ball 🥎 etc. Here you can see us practicing step 1 of the exercise!
